FUNG FOR GOVERNOR
MAYOR ALLAN FUNG
Born February 25, 1970 in Providence, Rhode Island, Allan W. Fung graduated from Classical High School and attended Rhode Island College in Providence, Rhode Island. Allan earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science, with a minor in Business Management, and went on to receive his Juris Doctorate from Suffolk University in Boston, Massachusetts. He was also successful in completing the prestigious Leadership Rhode Island program.
In 1996, Fung began his career working as a litigation associate for Mandell, Schwartz & Boisclair until 1999. Allan then went on to work as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the Rhode Island Department of the Attorney General's office until 2001. Allan subsequently began working for MetLife in 2001 as their Government Relations Counsel through 2009.
In 2002, Allan won his first election and served as Cranston's City-Wide Councilman from 2003 - 2007. Allan went on to win his campaign for Mayor of Cranston in 2008 and is currently in his 3rd term. Fung made Rhode Island history by becoming the first Asian-American Mayor in the state. Cranston is the third largest city in Rhode Island.
Since taking office in January 2009, Mayor Fung has accomplished a number of his ambitious objectives. He has boosted economic development by supporting existing businesses and by bringing in over 1000 new jobs to Cranston. He has reduced the city’s operational expenses and continues to explore consolidation and other savings initiatives with other municipalities. He was the first Mayor in the state to successfully negotiate pension reform with two major unions by replacing the costly defined benefits pension system with a defined contribution plan for new employees. Committed to community engagement, Fung has held town hall meetings so that he can have a continuing dialogue with his residents and to respond to neighborhood concerns.
Fung is the former President of the Rhode Island League of Cities and Towns, the former Chairman of the Rhode Island Governor’s Insurance Council, and is the former President and Chairman of the Board of the Rhode Island Association of Chinese Americans. He previously served on the board of the Rhode Island College Alumni Association
Allan Fung is a political leader who's motivation is to serve. For the last 10 years, he has served the people of Cranston on the city council and as Mayor. He thrives on solving the human problems most politicians leave in their wake and he understands the balance of fiscal discipline and social responsibility necessary to do that.
Allan is a successful Republican in a Democratic state because the interests of the people are the only interests he has ever served. Proponents and politicians on both sides of the issues are willing to negotiate with him because they know that. As a result, Allan has been able to take on and solve tough issues that need to be solved for constituents.
He has a track record of getting results - adding over 1000 jobs for the people of Cranston, while other towns languished. Putting a lid on taxes, negotiating a solution both sides embraces to the local police and fire fighter's pension crisis. The ability to produce results has given him a sky-high approval rating of 82% in the city of Cranston.
Allan has decided to run for governor, not because he wants the office, but because he wants the job. Rhode Island faces serious financial and social problems that have yet to be solved. Allan, and people who have dealt with him on both sides of the aisle, believe that he has the smarts, the temperament, the toughness and the respect to take on these problems and lead Rhode Island into a brighter future.
Rhode Island is a great place to live and should be a great state. Rhode Islanders deserve more. A lot more. More effective and efficient government. More jobs. More return on the taxes they pay the state. A more effective and efficient safety net for those in need.
Allan is uniquely qualified to solve the issues that are holding Rhode Island back.
